Dakshina Kannada is bounded by the Arabian Sea on the west and lush green Western Ghats on the east. Its unspoilt beaches and breath-taking views of the ghats and vibrant, multi-faceted culture of the area make it a tourist’s paradise. Dakshina Kannada has many spots which can offer memorable experience to the visitors-long beautiful beaches, mysterious islands, curiosity-kindling forests, forever changing rivers, unbelievable varieties of flora, challenging mountains and many more.
Apart from the above mentioned natural khajana, Dakshina Kannada offers abundant cultural events of unmatched variety, such as Yakshgana and Kambala.
Climate:
It is humid in coastal region, cool in the ghats and warm in eastern region. Humidity as high as 70% during most of the year.
Water Resources:
Nethravathi, Kumaradhara,Payaswini, Gurupura and Shambhavi are some of important rivers of Dakshina Kannada.
Education:
Dakshina Kannada and udupi districts are in the forefront in the educational field of the country. There are educational institutions in and around mangalore,Udupi,Puttur,sullia, kundapura, karkalla and moodubidre which attract students from all over the country and abroad.
Literature:
In coastal Karnataka, languages Kannada,Tulu,Konkani and Byaari have shown great richness,capacity for harmony and created a culture of give-and-take.
Bhutha Worship (Bhutharadhane):
Tulunadu is home for countless local festivals and traditional events. Local performing arts, passed down from generaion to generation, are on display at many of these events, each a unique chance of experience the mysterious charm of Dakshina Kannada.
Yakshagana:
Yakshagana is a rich traditional art of Karnataka which has reached a great height among India’s traditional arts. It has a history of atleast five hundred years. It is a unique blend of varios arts like music,dance,makeup etc. The literature used for this dance-drama draws mostly on Puranic Stories. There are several Yakshagana troups which are sponsored by temples like Kateel, Dharmasthala, Mandarthi, Kamalashile, Mangaladevi etc in Coastal Karnataka.
Industries:
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been associated with Agricultural and Fisheries.. Of the total land of 8.3lakh hactares, 34% used for agricultural purposes, 10% for non-agricultural purposes, 37% is reserved forest area and 18% is common land. Agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries are the main occupation in these districts. Today, from the total export of Mangalore Tiles to other countries, 45% of these tiles are directly exported from the Mangalore Port.
Banking:
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts have given birth to four large nationalised bank viz., Corporation Bank, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank and to a leading private sector bank like Karnataka Bank Ltd., and a few others.
